Hubert Sinclair Wallace is a pampered, silly and dissolute young man who needs money. He has a definite plan in mind, and manages to convince Shirley Masterson, a prostitute, to introduce him to some professional criminals -- Hubert wants to execute his plan properly. But Shirley picks her men a little too well, and the gangsters to whom the unwitting Hubert presents his plan soon evolve their own variation on his theme. Before long, there is a fire, and when it is extinguished, two charred bodies are discovered. Then a ransom note is delivered to Hubert's parents and Detective Superintendent Lewis is soon involved in a very ugly case. But Lewis can be just as vicious and ugly as the people he is after ...
